August Update
Everytime of think of you, I give thanks to my dear God.-- Phillipians 1:3
We celebrated many special days this August. First, it was on August 15, 2008 that we received the referral of our precious Pei-Shan and saw her little face for the first time. We fell in love with her that minute and our lives have been forever changed. God knew what he was doing when he chose the perfect little girl for our family. We are truly blessed.
This month Alayna decided she can be a little pickier in her eating and will vigorously shake her head no when she doesn’t want something. It is rather cute, but I’m hoping she won’t be as picky and Nick and Amelia are in their eating. We’ll see how it “shakes” out. She is moving slowly on her teeth. As she finished her 13 month, she had 4 on top and still just 2 on bottom. She does like to hear her own voice and babbles frequently, but still is not talking. The only word we can make out is “Uh-oh”, generally used in context when something is spilled. Unfortunately, we hear it often!
As of this month Alayna has acquired the nickname of drama queen. Our easy going princess has started crying BIG crocodile tears at the drop of a hat. She doesn’t like Amelia’s rather aggressive playfulness and will often drop to the floor in tears if she even sees her coming. (Alayna is not totally to blame for her tears; she has been given reason to fear her sister on several occasions.) She can also turn on the water if you tell her no-no. Her and Amelia couldn’t be more polar opposites. One flashes the eyes and gives you “the look” and the other fills hers with tears.
On a happy note, Alayna enjoys being outside and the weather this month was beautiful. She loves to play in her sand box and be pushed on the swing set. I hope we have a nice fall because both girls love the out of doors. Mommy loves it to…less crankiness and better sleeping for all.
On August 16th, we celebrated 1000 days of Amelia being a part of our family. I just don’t know where the time goes. She knew her 1000th day was coming up and we would be spending it at the lake. I had already planned on surprising her with a jar of 1000 M&M’s. (I know, what kind of mother would give a “spirited” child like Amelia 1000 pieces of candy? I just couldn’t resist!) She went to the grocery store with me that Sunday and as we were passing the cake section, she felt like this was a cake worthy event. Okay, who can pass up cake? She picked one out, proudly carried it to the counter and asked the lady to write on it. Amelia is my party girl for sure! When it was cake time after dinner, she insisted on candles and required everyone to sing “Happy 1000 days” to her to the tune of Happy Birthday. The candles were relit a half dozen times while the song progressively lost its enthusiasm. Well worth it though, she was so happy.
We had visitors again this month. Uncle Eric, Shannon and their 5 kids came for a week. They had lots of activities planned but we did squeeze in some cousin time with swimming, putt putt, pizza nights and even a sleep over. The kids all had a ball. It’s too bad they live so far away. Poor Amelia, she was sad when Sophie and Isabella went back to Memphis and then did the whole pouting thing again when Ella and AnnaO left her for Reno. It was good while it lasted!
Uncle Rick was in town for the last two weeks in August. Alayna still doesn’t willingly go to him but Amelia is like an appendage. She is always very interested in his tools and was helping him and Nick take the dock out over Labor Day weekend. (Not sure helping is the word he would use, but she claims that was what she was doing!) I am sure if Rick ever has doubts about being a bachelor, they are quickly wiped away after spending time under one roof with our family.
Finally, Cousin Sandy came for a quick visit at the end of August. She had a business trip in Toledo so flew in a few days ahead of time to spend the weekend with us. It was actually my birthday weekend, so I had a grown up dinner out. It was nice to catch up without any interruptions. All the kids loved seeing her and we can’t wait until she is a mom herself. Sandy, I know will see your little one’s sweet face soon!
Nick and Amelia both started school this month. Nick is beginning his senior year and was really looking forward to going back. Not sure if he is right or not, but he feels like his toughest load was last year and is looking forward to enjoying this year with his friends. Hmmm, he may have a surprise or two coming but I do hope he has a great end to his high school career.
Amelia went back to her Montessori pre-school this year. She was very excited to see all her friends and make some new one’s. She is a bright little girl who craves learning and structure. School is a huge positive for her and us. We still deal with some behavioral issues, but between sticking to a sleep schedule and pre-school things are much better in her little world.
Wishing everyone a happy and safe end to summer!
